LAKE WINGRA
WINTER SALT WORKING GROUP
Meetings:
Lake Wingra is the saltiest lake in the Madison area—due to years of excessive winter salt use. While salt keeps sidewalks safe, over-application has long-term impacts on water quality.
To address this issue, we’re forming a Lake Wingra Winter Salt Working Group to brainstorm practical, community-driven ways to reduce salt use by winter maintenance contractors at businesses and apartment buildings.
If you’re interested in water quality, winter maintenance practices, or local policy—and want to be part of shaping realistic solutions—we invite you to join us.
February 12, 11 am – 12 pm, Sequoya Library – Study Room 104:
Our first meeting focused on improving enforcement of the City of Madison’s ordinance on oversalting public sidewalks. While this ordinance is currently infrequently enforced, the City has expressed willingness to listen to constructive ideas and potential solutions from the community.
March 10, 11 am – 12 pm, Sequoya Library – Study Room 104:
We will continue discussing how to establish a clear salt threshold that constitutes a violation of the City’s ordinance, as well as what methods the City inspectors can use to measure salt application and determine whether a violation has occurred.
